Abstract : Although photoplethysmography imaging (PPGI) is often associated with remote heart-rate monitoring, the physiological information contained in camera recordings extends far beyond cardiac pulsations. Subtle spatial and temporal variations in skin perfusion reflect multiple physiological processes, offering a unique opportunity to investigate cardiovascular regulation and microcirculatory function in a completely non-contact manner. This talk provides an overview of research exploring these possibilities across a range of physiological and clinical applications. Representative examples include the investigation of perfusion synchronization, cardiorespiratory coordination, venous hemodynamics, diabetic microcirculation, allergic skin responses, and facial perfusion during simulated hypovolemia. Alongside these applications, advances in signal processing that have enabled the extraction and interpretation of physiological information from camera recordings will also be discussed. Collectively, these examples illustrate how PPGI has evolved into a versatile tool for studying cardiovascular and microcirculatory physiology and highlight its potential for future biomedical and clinical applications.
